Quantification of Plagiocephaly - head deformations in infants
Hagit Hel-Or, Hila Sarig-Bahat
The Problem - Positional or deformational plagiocephaly is the leading cause of head shape abnormalities in infants . It is characterized by occipital flattening and asymmetric cranial vaults, due to external or mechanical forces acting on the skull prenatally or postnatally. Growing evidence has been showing that it can lead to permanent deformation of the head, neck and face, and may have developmental implications including learning disabilities, language disorders, perceptual & sensorimotor problems, and poorer social skills
The Solution- The goal of this study is to develop an automated system for evaluating plagiocephaly in infants. The automated system will provide an objective and quantitative (rather than the existing subjective) evaluation of the severity of head deformation
The automation and standardization of the measure will allow reliable evaluation of head deformation, for accurate and early diagnosis as well as effective follow up.
